General Data Protection Regulations

The General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) took effect on May 25, 2018. This regulation brought about significant changes to data protection laws and introduced several new legal concepts.

Under GDPR, “personal data” is defined as any information that pertains to an identified or identifiable individual (referred to as a data subject). An identifiable individual is someone who can be directly or indirectly identified through factors such as their name, identification number, location data, online identifier, or other specific factors related to their physical, physiological, genetic, mental, economic, cultural, or social identity.

Since May 25, 2018, all organizations that handle personal data are required to comply with GDPR. Failure to comply has resulted in fines for many companies, regardless of their size.
